Internet Dangers

What are the greatest dangers of the Internet? How should schools address these dangers?

One of my concerns regarding the internet and students is that the students I have seem to have difficulty in determining fact vs. cyberfiction. Many students seem to think that if it's on the web, it must be true....when that is so far off reality. It doesn't seem to matter that I emphasize the fact that (almost)anyone can post to a web site and that it is up to the reader to consider the source! We have done several exercises in class to research info on the web; they had a hard time using MARVEL at first. But with some practice, they are now using it. I do think it's hard to break the Google habit; it's the only search engine most students are familiar with. Another problem I have had at Bonney Eagle is that the filters in place are too extensive! I had to post this from home, since I got blocked from posting to this blog at school!

Good points about the need to help kids evaluate websites, Robin. It's great to have a projector with a computer to be able to do some group instruction on what to look for when evaluating sites.

Thanks for your sharing of work today. That really made the day for me.

See you in April.

Robin, It is very difficult for students and adults to determine fact vs. fiction on the web. I hope some of our strategies yesterday will be helpful to your students. If we just make kids healthy skeptics when they use the web, we will have done something!
Thanks for being a guinea pig for yesterday's protocol. Hope your sore throat is better.
It's great to have you in class.
